Bare Essentials

in Project Me,Shopping

I’ve already mentioned how much I love receiving gift cards! So you can imagine how excited I was to receive several American Express gift cards from my employers for the holidays. With gift card, there’s always the nice dilemma of  deciding “what to buy”. I ultimately chose to spend the money on the essentials: bras and undies.  I know…not nearly as fun as buying a new bag or shoes, but definitely worth the investment.  The last time I was fitted for a bra was in 2008 when I went shopping for one to wear with my wedding dress.  Since then, my body has changed significantly, so  it was time to get fitted again. I went to Nordstrom (my go-to shopping spot) and happened to run into the same sales assistant that took care of me two years ago. She measured me and reported that the bra I was currently wearing was one band size too big and two cup sizes too small!  We went through my options and I left there with two great everyday bras, a sturdy strapless and a few basic nude and black undies. I can not say enough wonderful things about the customer service at Nordstrom and especially, this particular sales assistant that helped me for a good 45 minutes in the dressing room. The final bill was not cheap, but the quality of the merchandise and my overall experience was well worth it!  So tell me…

Have you ever been properly fitted?

Never.
And I fear that!
Good for you for getting that done. The little snippets pictured are pure loveliness : )

I’ve gotten fitted a few times. Crazy how your body changes and you can end up wearing a bra that’s totally wrong for you (and equally crazy how much of a difference a properly sized bra makes!)

After my first pregnancy, yes… but haven’t gone back to get another fitting since. So far, the bras still feel ‘right’… =)

LOVE your new background!

I pay a good sum for my bras. I had a friend who once gawked when i said I was willing to pay 45 for a bra. She said she got hers for 15, i told her I did not have 15 dollar breasts. I think the more endowed and “special needs” you have the rarer it is to find a good bra. I was something like a 32DD which used to be really hard to find in stores. I also like them to be lined (in case it gets cold at work which could cause a situation not suitable for 8th grade boys) and I need underwires (I’ve had two children). I find good sales on bras at figleaves, bare essentials, and vicky secret where I can get a trusted brand for cheap sometimes. But i think a good bra/ the right support is soooo worth every penny. It can make or break you’re look, relieve nack tension, etc. Me and my friend talk about this topic

No I totally get spending the money on that – it’s something I don’t really want to spend my money on otherwise, so it’s nice for someone else to buy it :-)

Never, can you believe it? I love to buy lingerie though. Maybe I should get properly fitted…

Never. Which is actually sad because I realized, after a few years, that I was wearing the wrong size completely – totally uncomfortable, don’t ever try it. :P

Now everything is good though. Sometimes I think I should have gotten properly fitted when I was younger just to avoid discomfort and the constant guessing game. :/

I love lingerie shopping! Nordstrom is my go-to spot for bras an I love Soma for panties and nightgowns. I am definitely not a $15 bra girl and I’ll admit that I’ve spent as much as $88 on one bra and I’m not ashamed! My husband thinks I look great, I feel great, and people can’t believe my bra size (which isn’t small) because I have proper support. Every lady deserves to feel pretty, sexy, and supported. :)

Before I got married I slept in old t-shirts and shorts, but as I’ve matured I started buying comfy loungewear and undies that feel great and look presentable. It’s amazing what the right fabrics, cuts, and styles can do for your self-esteem.

Um … no. I’m sure I should … I just can’t ever bring myself to do so. Sigh.

And I’m loving the new look … of the blog, that is! :)

Nora January 20, 2011 at 12:20 pm

I haven’t been fitted since the summer; I was wearing the right bra at the time which kind of surprised me! Good to know that I was on the right track :) I love buying new bras and undies; one of my favorite things ever.

i have not been properly fitted, but something tells me that I’m not really the cup size victoria’s secret want me to think I am. And you know I LOVE me some Nordstrom. Their customer service rights so many of the wrongs of this world, lol. So score on your recent purchases, there’s nothing like some nice new delicates to make your day :)

I’ve only been measured once, because my best friend forced me on a shopping trip. It was quite a traumatic trip, with a woman who was about a foot shorter than me and looked a lot like my old maths teacher trying to get my top off in the middle of a communal changing room. I’ve been a bit put off getting measured ever since.

Underwear is always a good investment – so, great buys, Maddy. This is really, really embarrassing, but I only found out that bras actually come in different sizes when I was about 27. No wonder I was always confused why some fitted and some not. (My excuse: Being a kid in the 70s = mums who had burned their bras.)

I’ve never been fitted. I probably should though, I have a feeling I am in need of one. Good for you girl, I know buying new underthings makes me feel like a new woman ;)

No, I’ve never been fitted, but I’ve always wanted to! I actually started the process once, at a local lingerie boutique, but I pretty much had the most unhelpful sales girl ever so I left before the appointment was over, lol! I think I need to add this to my 2011 to do list :)

I love gift cards. Especially ones like Amex that you can spend anywhere. Funny, I was just talking to my friend last night who owns a chain of stores. He was telling that about 50% of gifts cards never get used. That’s a lot of lost cards I think.

I was fitted at Victoria’s Secret a few years ago, and they tried to tell me that I wore a D cup! Seriously, I’m a solid B cup. Since then, I think that VS has a screwy fitting system for their bras. Been a convert to Hanes ever since!

Yes, I have. Several times, in fact. The first time was on a trip to the US, where I went to Victoria’s secret to stock up as they have much more of an exciting collection than was available here at the time. That was many years ago, though, so now we have much more to choose from here, too. After having had breast cancer, I had to be fitted again after the initial surgery, and then again after the reconstruction and the symmetry surgery. Thing is, the surgeries have made my front parts so much smaller and firmer, I no longer really need a bra, at least not an underwired one. I guess I’m just using bras due to old habits. :)

Not really, I am tooooo embarrassed! Plus, now that I’m “larger” it’s hard to find the size that fits. Maybe when I lose the weight. I think there is nothing prettier than well-fitting bras and panties that make you feel pretty.
Good for you in a wise investment!

I have and it was a little shocking…sort of in a good way. Apparently I have big boobs and a small body. It’s a good thing until you have back problems. But I look good in a bra! Fun post.

I’ve had fitting’s for tailored clothing for weddings and work suits and plus been for a bra fitting several times, though I was not comfortable with the band size they choose and cup size, the band size was way to tight, I prefer to keep it a little looser one band larger, so it feels more breathable.

Not lately…but I agree that a good bra fitting is a good thing. I haven’t been fitted in four years, but I don’t think that much has changed in that time. Its hard buying bras in China (and it was impossible in Korea) because, I don’t know what it is, even though the sizes are the same, it seems like the cups are closer together here. Closer together = uncomfortable!!!
